Market Disruption and Innovation From Sensors to Servers

It has been a while since I issued a blog. Earlier in the year I moved from heading the ARM server initiative to lead the group that drives all of ARM’s vertical marketing initiatives. Well, everything EXCEPT servers.

The goal of this blog is to outline some of the exciting areas that ARM is working on with its ecosystem partners across the “sensors to servers” landscape. I will delve into these areas in more detail in the coming months. So let’s start at the low end and work our way to core of the network

1. Internet of Things (IoT): Up front, I will declare that I am not a fan of the term. Really as it is simply too nebulous for me. With that said, many people use it! Other than the obvious “how big, revenue wise, is this phenomenon?” debate raging in the press, the other discussion is whether this is evolutionary or revolutionary. I would argue it is a bit of both. In terms of the underlying technology, there is nothing that radical here. That said the services that will be enabled due to the ubiquity of connectivity, will, I believe, radically change the way we live our lives. Hopefully for the good! In this domain, I believe the key for ARM is in assisting the ecosystem in dev...

Fortune Brainstorm Green

A very shiny Cadillac with a chrome “ELR” badge on the back is parked outside the Fortune Brainstorm Green event. ELR, because this is an electric Cadillac sports coupe.

As I drove to the venue from the Los Angeles airport, I spotted Chevrolet Volts, a Nissan Leaf and even a few of the new Tesla Saloons. To me this was a visible sign of the major changes that are taking place as energy efficiency is put at the heart of more and more industries. For ARM, it’s been at the core for decades, putting us in a fantastic position today.

Fortune magazine’s “Brainstorm Green” is an annual event for corporations, non-governmental organizations (NGO) and government officials in the environmental space to get toge...

Moonshot - a shot in the ARM for the 21st century data center

Greetings from New York City, where I spent the day yesterday participating in an HP event in which they further lifted the curtain on their Project Moonshot. In case you were not aware, HP’s Moonshot system announcement and the HP Pathfinder Innovation Ecosystem announcement are closely aligned with ARM’s philosophy and approach to solving technology and business challenges.

For the past 4 years, ARM has been working on bringing the low power leadership we have demonstrated in the mobile and consumer markets into the server space. In order to match the incredible growth in demand for data being generated by “always on” mobile consumers, the legacy power hungry and inefficient data center solutions cannot meet this demand in a long term sustainable fashion. Moonshot is an extremely important program because it is addressing an evolving server environment where mobility enables access to more applications and data, anytime and from anywhere.

It is going to take innovation, collective intelligence and partnership to bring a paradigm shift into this space that has been somewhat hampered by the lack of architectural choices. It’s time to move past the ...

Bringing the Benefits of the Smartphone to Pay-TV

On Monday this week, ARM together with FXI Technologies presented our proof-of-concept demonstration of DLNA Consumer Video HTML5 Remote User Interface (RUI) at as of the Innovation Showcase at the CableLabs Winter Conference in Orlando (see video at the end of this blog). Based on open source components including Linaro, Ubuntu, Gstreamer, and QT Webkit, the proof-of-concept demo highlights a major trend and disruption in the traditional Set-Top Box space defining the evolution towards in three key areas:

New exciting form factors enabled by ultra-low power silicon originally developed for the SmartphoneOpen application development platforms “Pay-TV” readiness
We partnered with 4 key operators aroun...

2013 - A Lucky Year For All Smartphone Consumers

Mobile World Congress is always a good guide of the trends that you are going to see in the coming year. Though “13” is traditionally considered to be unlucky, 2013 is going to be a very good year for smartphone consumers. After 4 days and 22 miles walked (according to my ARM® Powered Fitbit), this is my own set of predictions for 2013.

Great User Experience For All
Normally when you are looking at what is going to happen in the coming year, the focus is on the high-end superphones. This year great things will be happening in both the entry-level and mid-level smartphones.

Unless you are lucky enough to live in a market where handsets are heavily subsidized, a $600 smartphone is beyond reach for most consumers, but now, you can great user experience from $50. This was demonstrated by a Spreadtrum-based smartphone, which features the ARM Cortex™-A5 processor and Mali™-30...
