Security and IoT - Two Topics on Operators' Minds

We are in the run-up to Mobile World Congress and there is a lot happening in the mobile device ecosystem. Two technology areas with a lot of mobile and media operator traction are security and the new and enhanced services this brings, and the connected-everything Internet of Things – how to enable lots of small scale devices to connect to the net and offer a set of interesting new services. Expect to see related products and announcements at MWC!

Security and trust – this is central to delivering the services we want on our everyday devices. Well-designed system wide security can bring better and totally new user experiences, such as the ability to view any content on any screen, pay for things quickly and simply online with a securely captured PIN code, keeping your corporate data safely separated from your personal data, and protecting the handset subsidy investment. These services need the right tool for the job – a ...

A 2013 Resolution for the Data Center

A new year always brings such promise – it’s a chance to start over and resolve to do better. As we enter 2013, the same is true in the cloud computing industry. Hardware and software vendors are coming together, resolving to address the serious issues facing the data center – not just power and performance, but the challenge to do more with less and to drastically reduce total cost of ownership. Increased integration and smaller systems are the wave of the future, and the ARM architecture is at the heart of that 2013 resolution.

Never has this been more evident than at the recent ARM TechCon, a defining event for the future of private and public cloud devices. It was there that myriad pieces of a new breed of cloud server came together. Software and hardware vendors spoke out in support of the AppliedMicro X-Gene™ Server on a Chip™ platform, the first implementation of the ARMv8 64-bit architecture. At an event co-hosted by ...

Google Nexus 10 - Connecting a Mobile Experience with Full PC Functionality?

For the last 3 years, most would agree that tablets have successfully provided a much better content-consumption experience than the legacy PC, and have done so while providing a great mobile experience. The rate of innovation by the mobile ecosystem caught the legacy PC industry off guard, and in 2013, some expect more tablets to ship than legacy notebooks.

Have tablets really replaced the full functionality of the legacy PC? Some may argue that content creation will always belong to that realm. Well, with the help of Samsung Semiconductor, I set out to see what I could do on a tablet. By participating in the Exynos Hack Pack Program, Samsung outfitted me with the latest Google Nexus 10 -- built by Samsung and powered by the new Samsung Exynos 5 Dual. My goal was to see if I could use the Nexus 10 to do everything I have done in the past on my home PC.

"Nexus" is defined as "a connection or series of connections linking two or more things." After using the Google Nexus 10 for the last...

My Post-PC World - Connectivity Without Bounds

What will the post-PC world look like? This was one of the most asked questions this year at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Having been in the middle of this revolution for the past seven years, I'd like to raise my hand and state my predictions of what I think is the future. But first let’s start with some context for the reader…

Mr. Bean-like moments. I saw one of those Mr. Bean-like moments in Las Vegas, NV which struck me at the time as funny, but in reality, it's just the way of the new world. A man was walking down the sidewalk in Las Vegas looking at his mobile, you know the way one does with eyes on an important email. Guess what? He walked straight into a sign post, dropping the phone and ending up flat on the ground in front of about 30 people.

Snow, snow and more snow. If you haven't heard, the past week has seen the UK covered with a blanket of snow. Well, we don't cope too well with the winter white stuff; roads were closed, planes/trains cancelled and schools closed (not long enough for my kids though). Doing a quick poll amongs...

ARM Technology-Based Education Tablets: A big hit at CES

The tablet is still one of the hottest products at 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Education tablets based on ARM technology and Android are attracting considerable attention. We were fortunate to meet with Jun Liu, the CEO of Shenzhen Scope, when CES opened on Tuesday. The company has received much attention because of an important education tablet deal – One Tablet PC per Child (OTPC) – in Thailand in 2012. (Bangkok Post published the news in June 2012.)

Few people know what the deployment actually is. According to Jun’s update, Shenzhen Scope has deployed 900,000 OTPC units to the primary schools in Thailand in 2012. The government’s tablet specification consists of a seven-inch display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 16GB storage memory, wireless LAN support of 802.11b/g/n, 6 hours of battery life, and it must meet the Federal Communications Commission’s safety standards. The current products are powered by Rockchip’s SoC chip, which is based on the ARM® ...
