The future of always-on, always connected computing got a big boost today from Microsoft. Microsoft demonstrated Windows working across ARM based devices supported by SoCs from Qualcomm, NVIDIA, and Texas Instruments. Showing a range of products from tablets to an ultra-thin laptop, today's demonstration highlights the ability to bring Windows functionality to virtually any shape or size of device. Together with support from the ARM ecosystem, consumers will enjoy a new level of always connected computing. For more information on Microsoft’s Windows 8 preview event, see here.Another key highlight of the day was a keynote given by Ian Drew at the COMPUTEX EXECUTIVE SPEECH. Ian’s talk, “Enable, Empower, Envision: Connected ARM, Connected Life” highlighted the importance of partnership as an enabler of innovation in the computing industry and the strength of ARM’s ecosystem to deliver a diverse range of devices.
Other exciting news from Computex, TI announced the OMAP4470 applications processor, the newest member of the OMAP 4 family which is based on the ARM® CortexTM-A9. This new processor has immense performance with clock speeds up to 1.8 GHz per core, while maintaining low power levels to enhance the future possibilities within mobile computing. You’ll start to see it in smartphones, tablets, ultra-thin laptops and similar end products by the first half of 2012.
Last but not least, Jenny Su had a chance to catch up with Mukesh Lulla, the President and CEO from TeamF1 to discuss their Residential Gateway software solutions and future opportunities of scaling to multi-core both with the residential gateway products and the ARM Cortex-A15 which can enable greater than 4 core devices. The latter part of the video demonstrates the SMB Security Gateway solution on a dual core ARM11 based board from Cavium Networks.
