A Non-Techie’s ARM Powered Holiday Wish List

It’s hard to believe that almost a year ago I joined ARM, as a new graduate…what a world spin it has been! With limited knowledge of what ARM did, let alone how a microprocessor works, joining this team has brought me to a whole new understanding of what technology is and can be. Purchasing an electronic device no longer is what color does it come in or how small can it be, rather “How does the limited size affect the battery life and connectivity?” or “What type of user interface and customizations will best fit my needs?” What I have learned is that, what’s behind all the plastic and visual appeal is what actually enables my always connected and highly digital life to function. So keeping that in mind, these are the products that I want to give my family as long as I don’t keep them for myself.

Amazon Kindle 2
Freescale i.MX31 Processor
Qualcomm MSM6801
ARM1136JF-S & ARM9 Processors

This upgraded version of the Kindle 2 has a 9.7” display, 3G wireless to download new books right from the device. It even has an auto-rotating screen that shifts from portrait to landscape view when you turn the device and a “read-to-me” feature where it will read out loud to you what you are viewing on the screen. All these capabilities and the battery life will last for days, which is perfect for long trips and plane rides. Having already hooked my Dad on the iPhone 3GS where he loves to listen to books on tape (or iTunes), he still misses the benefits of having an actual book in front of him. With this larger screen and voice features he gets the best of both worlds.

Garmin Nuvi 205
ST Cartesio Processor
ARM9 processor

While Garmin is one of the most popular navigational device brands, it’s the extra features on this one that make it so great. With JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter, and a calculator. The coolest feature by far is the photo navigation, where you can download pictures from Garmin Connect Photos and the device will lead you to the location. This would be the perfect gift for my mom who loves to travel and has to hit every museum, monument, and historical landmarks that she can.

This fabulous camera is six megapixels with 12x optical zoom and includes burst shooting capabilities. It can capture 60 to 1200 frames per seconds based on the resolution and features a new high speed CMOS sensor that helps take care of illumination. The best part is that it shoots 1920 x 1080 Full HD movies at 60fps as well. While this one will have sit on my wish list due to its high price point, the quality and capabilities of this camera makes captured memories come to life.
