Mali GPUs Storming into 2012 - With Much More To Come

It’s certainly been an action packed first quarter for ARM and our ARM® Mali™ Ecosystem Partners, and we hope you’ve had a chance to catch up with us at one or more of the recent string of events. If not, there are many more opportunities coming up! Here is a wrap up of the event highlights from our perspective.

Consumer Electronic Show (CES), Las Vegas
We kicked off with the annual wake up from the Christmas holidays at CES in Las Vegas, where ARM Powered® products filled the show floor and members of the ARM team clocked up many miles of walking from hall to hall and from meeting to meeting – a tiring but hugely productive few days. Check out for yourself the wide range of products that were on show by viewing our CES Playlist on the ARMFlix YouTube channel. There is also a range of CES blogs, all wrapped up in Andy Frame’s day 4 “What’s Hot” blog.

Mobile Games Forum (MGF), London
At MGF 2012, Edvard Sørgård of ARM joined the platform debate as a panellist, discussing the choices of operating systems and hardware to underpin the next generation of content to bring console-like experiences to smartphones and tablets. The Media Processing Division from ARM showed a range of our latest and greatest demos in the breakout area and found it an ideal opportunity to network with current and potential new members of the Mali Ecosystem.

Mobile World Congress (MWC), Barcelona
The MWC in Barcelona this February was as busy as ever. Catch up on what ARM had on show through our videos by viewing the MWC Playlist on ARMFlix, and re-live the event (without the fatigue) through our range of event blogs.

Game Developers Conference (GDC), San Francisco
If you were at the GDC recently and had time to visit the ARM booth, thank you for dropping by and we hope you enjoyed what you saw.

The ARM booth was brought alive with our own demos alongside a range of demos from our Mali Ecosystem Partners, showing just what smartphones, tablets and smart TVs will be capable of in the near future. Check out the GDC playlist on the ARM Flix YouTube channel to see a video wrap up of ARM at GDC, ARM demos and the latest concepts from Havok, Geomerics, Soft Kinetic, SiXiTS with Unity Technologies, Metaio, Aurasma and Outracks.

The Launch and Release of ARM DS-5 v5.9 Toolchain

On the first day of GDC week, ARM launched and released the new ARM® DS-5™ v5.9 Toolchain to provide developers with an integrated processor and GPU software optimization platform for mobile gaming. The DS-5 toolchain is well established in the market, with professional, basic and free community editions. This new version enables:
  • Fast, easy development of high-performance Android™ apps
  • Integrated optimization across ARM Cortex™ processors and ARM Mali™ GPUs
  • Extended battery life for longer game play, supported by the recently announced ARM Energy Probe
  • Debug and trace of SMP Linux kernel and applications, and more

The toolchain is available for download now.

Lorna Dunn, Marketing Communications Manager, ARM, Lorna’s background is set firmly in marketing, in education and experience…giving her a much less technical outlook than many of her colleagues and the ability to see things from a more mainstream consumer point of view. As an accredited Chartered Marketer, Lorna holds the CIM Diploma in Marketing which she went on to after an International Business degree from Aston University Business School and EDHEC, France. Lorna has since clocked up over 10 years working in Marketing Communications for technology companies. Working with the Media Processing Division at ARM to communicate what Mali can deliver to the outside world gives Lorna an incredible insight into the technology and partnerships that come together to deliver the devices that are really now part of our everyday lives – however technical we are!
