ARM Sponsors Inaugural Linley Tech Mobile Device Conference

ARM’s Cortex™ family of processors and Mali™ GPU’s are the applications, media processing and graphics acceleration engines at the heart of today’s smartphones. Audio and video codecs have been implemented efficiently in software on several previous generations of ARM-based processors and more recently many of these codec implementations have been optimized to take advantage of the NEON™ coprocessor technology for higher performance and lower power. To support the growing requirement for graphical user interfaces (GUI) and 3D gaming on high resolution mobile devices ARM have added the Mali family of graphics processor units (GPU’s) to its product line up. The Mali GPUs accelerates OpenGL® ES and OpenVG® APIs today and will support full profile OpenCL and DirectX™11 in the near future. They have the same design goal of efficient performance that made the ARM Cortex family of processors so successful.

ARM is a Platinum sponsor of the conference which focuses on the system design aspects of mobile devices and to support this theme we will present two technical tracks, one focused on software optimization for multimedia applications on Cortex and the other on using our Mali-400 MP graphics technology for visual computing. In addition we will be demonstrating some of the latest partner silicon showing what Cortex-A9 and Mali-400 MP can achieve when used together in a system-on-chip. One example will be True//Force, a 3D stereoscopic space racer game rendered at full HD 1080p 60 frames/sec – cool shades will be provided for you to experience the full effect.

The user experience is increasingly defined by the graphics processing capabilities available for deployment. Performance efficiency in the embedded space is the key for delivering this experience. The Mali-400 MP GPU from ARM is the world’s first multi-core embedded GPU and is being widely deployed in consumer devices throughout 2011. This presentation will address how the Mali-400 MP architecture delivers high performance, power-efficient graphics for mobile consumer devices and discuss its performance, bandwidth and die area characteristics.

The smartphone revolution has brought about an explosion of user application software for the ARM Cortex architecture. Solutions now include various codecs and multimedia applications tuned for NEON, highly optimized JITs, and multithreaded applications that take advantage of multiprocessing. This presentation takes a look at some of the work that has already been done for ARM Cortex processors, and looks what to expect in the future with addition of LPAE and virtualization to the Cortex-A15 processor.

Chris Ward, Mali Business Development Manager, ARM, based in Austin, Texas, spends his time talking to many people about Mali graphics technology and most recently about the Mali-400 MP based smartphones, tablets and TV’s that are coming to market. Chris joined ARM’s Design Consulting team 12 years ago from Texas Instruments where he was an ASIC program manager. He has been working on Mali for the past 4 years.
