Game developers head off from GDC to create the next wave of exciting content

Things have now wound down at the Moscone Center after a week of the Game Developers Conference (GDC). We’ve been catching up on what’s new, what’s cool and who’s who in the world of gaming, and after a hectic five days we’ve packed our bags and headed home.

It was a busy week, but what were the highlights? Well, for us at ARM, the rise of stereoscopic gaming was a hot topic and with our own Stereoscopic Space Racer game ‘TrueForce’ on show, we were really encouraged to see that.

The developments around gaming engines also caught our eye. Scaleform were showing their custom engine for rendering flash effectively on the GPU – it really works, it’s fast, and it makes the creation of UIs for games, in addition to UIs for applets, really easy.

The guys from Unity were also here in force, with their game engine now enabling developers to easily make strides into the mobile market. Among other useful features, it makes portable shader development much more convenient with the nifty ability to convert shaders written in CG for the PC, to Khronos™ GLSL for mobile.

It was also exciting to see how 3D screens on gaming and mobile devices are further enhancing the experience for the user. Incredible gaming experiences on portable devices are becoming a must-have for consumers. As more and more Mali GPU-based devices hit the market this year, ARM is bringing its GPU technology to futuristic devices and eye-popping gaming experiences are becoming reality.

We hope the winners of the Amlogic prize draw on our booth will be getting started this week on developing their games for the ARM®Mali™-400 GPU-based Amlogic Meson development board. By developing for ARM Mali GPUs, you develop for the leading devices of today and tomorrow.

Lorna Dunn, Marketing Communications Manager, ARM, Lorna’s background is set firmly in marketing, in education and experience…giving her a much less technical outlook than many of her colleagues and the ability to see things from a more mainstream consumer point of view. As an accredited Chartered Marketer, Lorna holds the CIM Diploma in Marketing which she went on to after an International Business degree from Aston University Business School and EDHEC, France. Lorna has since clocked up over 10 years working in Marketing Communications for technology companies. Working with the Media Processing Division at ARM to communicate what Mali can deliver to the outside world gives Lorna an incredible insight into the technology and partnerships that come together to deliver the devices that are really now part of our everyday lives – however technical we are!
