The Incredible Becomes Reality at MWC 2011

Stunning graphics powered by Mali GPUs coming to a mobile device near you!

We have been busy preparing for MWC this year – and hope to impress and inspire you with a shiny new Augmented Reality (AR) demo put together by our Cambridge demo team. Here is a taster of what you can come and see for yourself at MWC! We’ll also be catching up with our business Partners and talking about the upcoming solutions that they are building ARM® Mali™ graphics into. In the last three months alone, four more licensees in the mobile space have chosen Mali GPUs – continuing our momentum in bringing new levels of graphical capabilities to mobile handsets. This includes Spreadtrum Communications, Inc. choosing the Mali-300 GPU to bring high performance, embedded 3D graphics to affordable entry-level mobile phones.

So, let me tell you about the AR demo. It’s a simple puzzle that you interact with in the “real world” to complete in the “virtual world”.

Imagine the laboratory table of a mad scientist – you as the player place multiple AR markers on the table. Looking through the special lens (in this case a mobile phone), you are able to see stunning 3D objects projected onto the markers. The aim? Move the objects around to get the laser beam from the laser emitter to the flask containing the bubbling liquid. How? By using various objects such as mirrors, prisms and portals to manipulate the laser beam.

The player is able to experience fun game play while observing the stunning, high-poly 3D objects that are being accelerated by the ARM Mali-400 MP GPU. Each of the objects has a unique shader effect applied, really demonstrating the performance of the GPU.

Combining the real world with the virtual world has always been a challenge in the industry. With the current generation of ARM Cortex™-A9 CPUs and Mali-400 MP GPUs, it is all possible. The Cortex processor performs the tag detection and image processing whilst the Mali GPU makes the content look visually amazing. If we can do this today, imagine the capabilities that the next-generation Mali-T604 GPU architecture and OpenCL will bring.

We will also be showcasing the impressive TrueForce stereoscopic space racer game demonstrated by ARM at CES 2011. However, if you thought the 720p HD version was impressive, come and see the significantly upgraded demo at 1080p HD on Mali-400 silicon from ST-Ericsson. The performance really packs a punch.

We don’t just work independently on these demos to entertain and impress you – we are achieving great things by working with our Partners within the Mali Ecosystem – and the community is expanding at an incredible rate. Next week in Barcelona we will be unveiling some brand new demos and content from our Ecosystem Partners as well as from ARM’s demo engineering teams. Ecosystem Partner demos include Polarbit Reckless Racing, Kishonti NaviGenie 3D mobile navigation and others.

We will also be showcasing the game Kwaak3 (based on the open source Quake3 game) in 720p HD.

Come along to our booth, #1C01 in Hall 1.0 and experience for yourself the excitement that Mali-400 MP GPU is bringing to mobile devices. Our demo line up really shows its capabilities and with Mali-400 MP powered devices hitting the market, you can look forward to having all this eye candy at your fingertips!

And of course there is more coming – looking to the future, devices based on the next generation Mali-T604 GPU are guaranteed to astound you with visually rich user experiences not previously seen in consumer devices. The ARM team will be on hand to tell you more.

And if you make it away from the show floor, you can also catch members of the ARM team at the International Mobile Game Awards Ceremony. As a sponsor, we have been blown away by the calibre of games being developed for mobile.

So enjoy the show and look forward to seeing great content and gaming coming to your Mali-powered mobile device soon!
