Visual Computing Will Be Powered By ARM Mali Graphics

Wow – what a day yesterday was, here at ARM Technology Conference (Techcon) 2010. All the effort and energy from a hugely focussed team has resulted in a fantastic reception for our new GPU, the Mali-T604. The buzz around the show and afterwards has been amazing – more than justifying the years of effort that the ARM Mali engineering teams have spent in creating this fantastic GPU for the new era of visual computing.

Building on the Successes of our Partner Mali platforms
Our fourth-generation GPU has been built on the success we have had with Mali-200 and Mali-400 MP. It was great that we had multiple Mali Partner platforms from Amlogic, Beijing Nufront, Samsung, ST Ericsson, STMicroelectonics and Telechips here to show off what we can do, with implementations ranging from Mali-200 to quad-core Mali-400 variants. The fantastic Samsung Orion applications processor (using a 4 fragment processor Mali-400 MP) being shown on the ARM Mali stand (see the video below) is the latest addition to our ever growing list of SoCs designed for the next wave of consumer electronic products.

Mali-T604 will deliver visual computing
Mali-T604 moves us from the visual entertainment provided by Mali-400 towards a world of visual computing. Linking with the Cortex™-A15 and CoreLink™ CCI-400 Cache Coherent Interconnect we bring compute subsystems to future consumer devices that are just now being prototyped by OEMs. The demand is there for the new applications which will allow us to interact with our devices in a more natural fashion, displaying hugely complex, yet immersive graphics and using the compute power available in the new GPGPU world to bring the new levels of performance these applications require.

The future is bright
Yesterday we were exhausted, last night we celebrated and today we’re energised and excited to be at the start of a new era of Mali graphics, a new family of GPUs in the Midgard architecture of which Mali-T604 is only the start. We are invigorated by the thought of driving graphics and GPGPU towards a new tomorrow, powered by ARM. Hold on tight, because if yesterday was anything to go by, it’s going to be a fun ride!

Ian Smythe, Director of Marketing - Media Processing Division, ARM, After dabbling in sonar and other DSP stuff, he went on to spend over a decade in the semiconductor industry. Ian's wife calls him a geek, but the tech guys at ARM really know he's the marketing guy - but we all know that visual processing is where the cool stuff is. Ian's challenge is to ensure that everyone uses ARM Mali technology for their latest and greatest multimedia products.
