The Latest Mali Graphics Demos – Eye Candy or Reality?

Posted by Saoud Moco, Oct 16 2009, 03:41 PM

Well the short answer is both. ARM® Mali™ GPUs are now showing off their true horsepower in Partner silicon hardware at various events across the globe, the next major venue being ARM TechCon3 in Santa Clara from October 21-23rd. These Mali GPU-enabled devices are making their way into smartphones, set-top boxes, digital TVs, portable navigation devices, smartbooks and much more.

What is great about the demos is that they show evidence of how the user experience is enhanced and how the latest User Interfaces (UIs) can now deliver an amazing sense of immersion in the 3D space.

Mali GPUs accelerate user interfaces, 2D and 3D maps, games and web browsers – but what’s different? The fact that Mali GPUs can give you 4x Anti Aliasing for free is one, and added to that, the Mali architecture keeps overall bandwidth and energy consumption low.

In the videos below you can see the Mali-200 GPU in action – starting off with the Canvas demo at HD 720p resolution, filling over 30 frames per second on the more complex scenes - the image quality and user experience is flawless.

Play a game of bowling like never before and you’ll get hooked by the magic of Mali. As they say, a picture paints a thousand words so click on the links below and see for yourself.

If the big screen isn’t your cup of tea, then stay with the clip to watch the mobile user interface demos from TAT and Lapland Studio/Ardites. Watch closely and be amongst the first to see a real 3D UI, where you move in 3D space, interact with your contacts with ease, see lighting effects as though you are immersed in the scene, and note the fluidity thanks to the performance you get on a Mali powered hardware platform - all this at screen sizes as small as 5 inches wide at WVGA resolution.

Finally, Mali Ecosystem Partner TAT show off their Reddish UI - a revolutionary innovative way of managing contact lists on your mobile:

Saoud Moco, Marketing Delivery Manager, ARM, went from drawing chip layouts in 2D to selling graphics processing units since his adventure started in 2001 with the Cambridge based company. Using the skills acquired in 2D/3D spatial arrangements and a growing taste for great looking artwork and graphics, it is only logical for such a visual enthusiast to pick the area of demos and platforms to befriend (OpenGL ES) graphics developers. The adventure has never been so amazing till now, with so much happening in the graphics world.
